The Winter Fungus

The “ear fungus” is one of the few fungi found growing in winter. It has a soft touch and ear like shape and is common on Elder trees. Another name for the fungus is Judas’s Ear named after Judas Iscariot who hanged himself from an Elder tree after betraying Christ to his executioners. The legend is that the ‘ears’ which emerge from elder wood represent his tormented soul.
